Becoming: Red Sanandaj and the Iranian Protests | Conference
At Historical Materialism I will be presenting a past-present ethnography examining forms of resistance and political self-organisation in Iranian Kurdistan, bringing the communist experiments in self-management of 1979 into dialogue with the Iranian protests of 2018. The paper traces continuities and transformations across these moments, asking how practices of collective organisation, dissent, and political participation challenge conventional understandings of the state, citizenship, and modernity. Through the concept of fractal systems of resistance, it considers how political movements reproduce, adapt, and reconfigure themselves across different historical and spatial contexts, generating pluriversal forms of political becoming beyond singular models of modernity and citizenship.
