Multimedial Representations of the Other | Conference
The Fourth International Conference on Visual Representations of the Other
2-5th December 2015, Institute of Ethnology and Folklore, Sofia, Bulgaria
Presentation of a paper extending debates on the construction and mediation of reality in East-Central Europe through an examination of the Polish Film Chronicle. The paper explores how the cinematic representation of the relationship between nature and culture became a site through which power and authority could be articulated, negotiated, and naturalised. Focusing on the Chronicle’s manipulation of this nature/culture dichotomy within the constructed and highly mediated landscape of film, the paper considers how seemingly observational images participated in shaping particular understandings of reality, society, and political order. In doing so, it examines the ways in which filmic representations of landscape, environment, and human intervention could produce and legitimise particular forms of knowledge and authority, contributing to broader debates about visual culture, ideology, and the production of reality in East-Central Europe.
